Abstract
Dammar resin is a nontimber tropical forest product from Dipterocarpaceae plants. Their woods have been utilized, but the other parts of the plant have almost no economy value. The resin is produced as secondary metabolite induced by malnutrition and drought. Therefore, this research was to conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the resin from three species of dammar, called by cat eye dammar, flesh dammar and stone dammar. The resin was separately extracted using hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol for 24 h at 5% (w/v). Antibacterial sensitivity test was performed against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The result showed that flesh dammar and stone dammar could inhibit the growth of two gram positive bacteria tested, namely S. aureus and B. cereus. The best solvent for obtaining the antibacterial agent from flesh dammar and stone dammar were ethyl acetate and ethanol, respectively.
